Notice of Hearing in Suburban Neighborhood_edited.jpg

What Does That Yellow Sign Mean?

In the Town of Hempstead, certain zoning applications require advance public notice. A Public hearing is scheduled where the proposed changes are presented assessed by the community before the Board makes its decision.

These requirements apply to certain types of applications, not every zoning matter.

That yellow sign could be your opportunity to make your voice heard before a decision is made!

How Can You Participate?

  1. If you are a resident who will be affected, always attend the hearing at the date, time and location listed on the yellow hearing notice sign.

  2. Learn about the proposal. Find out what changes are being requested.

  3. Hear the proposal and share your comments when given the opportunity.

  4. Submit written comments.

  5. Follow the decision. Find out whether the proposal was approved, denied, or approved with conditions.

What Happens After Approval?

Some zoning approvals include conditions intended to protect surrounding properties and neighborhoods.

These may address issues such as traffic, parking, noise, or how a property may be used.

Residents can review public decisions and report potential violations to the appropriate local government department.
